Gynecomastia Treatment – Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction surgery can diminish enlarged or bulging breast tissue caused by the common condition known as gynecomastia. Although some men develop a degree of gynecomastia during puberty and find that it eventually fades, other cases of the condition do not resolve on their own and can ultimately appear in adulthood. Gynecomastia may be the result of a hormonal imbalance, genetics, obesity, the use of certain kinds of drugs/steroids, or other factors. Undergoing a male breast reduction treatment offers the cosmetic benefits of removing the excess fat and/or glandular tissue that is characteristic of gynecomastia and giving the chest a firmer, flatter appearance. The procedure can enhance both aesthetics and self-esteem since gynecomastia is known to create significant levels of self-consciousness among many individuals who experience it.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

An ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery should be in reasonably good overall health, at or close to the average healthy weight for his body type, and have resolved any medical conditions that may interfere with surgery and the healing process. Candidates for gynecomastia treatment typically experience some of the following signs in their chest area:

  • Overdeveloped breast or glandular tissue
  • Excess fat in the breasts
  • Enlarged, puffy nipples
  • Lower chest fullness
  • Mild to moderate tenderness

Many individuals who have gynecomastia also experience embarrassment and a lack of self-confidence, often preferring to cover up their body in public or private situations. If you are concerned about gynecomastia and are seeking options to address the condition, Luxxery Boutique welcomes you to schedule a confidential consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Ayman Hakki, to determine whether male breast reduction surgery may be an appropriate solution.

What Does the Male Breast Reduction Procedure Involve?

The surgical details will vary for each patient but, typically, male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure utilizing general or local anesthesia. The treatment can usually be accomplished within a few hours. Prior to the surgery, an MRI or mammogram may be performed to determine whether your gynecomastia is primarily caused by excess fat deposits in the breasts, glandular tissue, or both.

In cases of glandular gynecomastia, incisions are often made in the underarm, under the chest, or at the areola to remove the glandular deposits. If excess fat is the primary symptom of gynecomastia (also known as pseudogynecomastia), our surgeon may choose to combine a liposuction procedure, or in some cases only use liposuction, to eliminate the fat deposits and achieve a firmer, flatter chest.

Regardless of the technique used, Dr. Hakki’s extensive surgical training and experience are met with his passion to provide patients natural-looking results that meet their expectations. Additionally, Dr. Hakki will take great care with incision placement during the procedure to maximize the potential for residual scarring that is as minimally noticeable as possible.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery?

Patients will likely experience swelling, bruising, or discomfort around the incisions, which can be eased with prescribed medication as needed and should fade during the healing process. To assist with recovery, a compression garment may be recommended to be worn for several weeks to protect your incisions and reduce swelling. Most patients can return to work within one week after surgery and resume moderate activities within two to three weeks. Strenuous activities should be avoided for a minimum of four to six weeks. It is very important to follow all post-operative guidelines to achieve a smooth recovery.
